We prepped and prepped for the move to Alaska. Our twenty-month Kansas tour was coming to an end. The movers packed us up on May 15 and the big truck came on the 16th.
We had to drive down to Dallas to ship our car. Eyeing a last chance to get the I-35 siblings together before our move, we all decided to get a cabin at Holly Lake to make it a long weekend.
We relaxed. The baby boy cousins played. We went on flat hikes and played mini-golf. We said our goodbyes to the Dallas family, unsure when we’d make it back to the lower 48. We had started using terms like ‘the lower 48’ even before moving to Alaska.
We drove back to Kansas. Our house all packed up, we moved onto the on-base hotel, the Temporary Lodging Facility or TLF. I transferred all of my work duties to my successor. Zach played at one of the local on-base parks. And we waited for our last few days in Kansas to move as quickly as all of the others.
