I parked the truck on the vehicle deck, found Kris and Z, and we set four-day’s worth of food and clothes in our cabin. We went out on the deck to watch Bellingham drift away. From the moment the horn sounded and the MV Columbia slowly pulled away, Z loved looking at the water.
The ship took the inner-passage. We drank hot coffee and cold juice.
We saw bald eagles, whales, and snow-capped mountains. But mostly we saw water.
We disembarked at Ketchikan, Wrangell, and Petersburg. We looked at fire trucks and went grocery shopping. We always made it back to the ship in plenty of time so Z could look at more water. Kris cooked peanut curry on our induction cooker. We read magazines and slept.
The glorious four-day passage ended too quickly. We re-packed our truck, waved to the shore at Haines, and slowly drove our truck off the ship and onto Alaska soil.
