128d. Whiteman AFB, MO to Colorado Springs, CO; June 24 – 25, 2023

We spent the morning at Whiteman, finishing laundry, playing on the jungle gym, and eating Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

We drove into Kansas and started counting windmills. We went to Topeka and stopped at the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Park.

The kids went through the history of the Supreme Court ruling and worked on their books in one of the kindergarten rooms. We learned that the school for African American children were relatively comparable to those of white children: similar pay for teachers, similar buildings, and similar funding; and it was that similarity where the Supreme Court still ruled that separate but equal is inherently unequal.

We completed the site tour and headed to Independence, KS to eat an early dinner at Pizza Hut. We then drove toward Hays, KS. Everybody picked songs on the way: Zach picked High Hopes, Ella picked Peter Pan Was Right, Anna picked Monody and Teddy picked the Star Wars theme. We checked into the Hilton Garden Inn and slept.

We woke up, ate, and drove north to Nicodemus National Historic Site.

We learned about the town, an town built by formerly enslaved people from Kentucky, from a sixth generation descendant of one of its founders. We walked to one of the old hotels and to the church.

The kids finished their books and got their badges.

Before we left, the kids played on the 1970s era playground. They enjoyed the teeter-totter, giant slide, and the merry-go-round.

We got back in the vehicles and drove on to Peterson Space Force Base. We got into TLF and spent the evening with our friends from Arkansas, the Kosers. We went back to TLF to plan our Colorado life.
